Jobs by Different Education Levels No job is unattainable for someone with the right desire and skills. These skills will almost always come from some form of education, whether it is through a technical training program, an Associates degree, a Bachelors degree or an advanced Graduate degree. Many degrees often work as a stepping stone towards another, more advanced, degree, meaning you can begin a job at one education level and can then move up as you receive future degrees. This helps to build experience for your resume while putting money in the bank at the same time. Nursing Nursing is a great example of a job that has many different opportunities with different education levels. You can begin as a CNA, a certified nursing assistant, with a short 6 month to one year technical program. This will allow you to work in a nursing home, doctor’s office or a hospital assisting patients and nursing staff with tasks like feeding, and changing patients. You can continue on with an LPN, a licensed practical nurse, which will require a 1-2 year program and will allow you to do basic bedside nursing under the direction of nurses and doctors. From here, nursing students can go on to become an RN with an Associates Degree or with a Bachelors Degree. Both degrees will allow an RN the same job capabilities, but Bachelors Degree RNs will be able to head into management positions. Teaching Daycare centers usually require teachers to have an Associates Degree in pre-school education, although some will require a Bachelors Degree in early childhood education if children over the age of 5 will be supervised, or you are planning to manage the facility. Teaching assistants, those who help grade school students with in-class tutoring, are usually allowed to teach with a high school diploma or minimal technical training. If you are interested in teaching at the grade school, middle school or high school level, you can begin teaching with a Bachelors degree in that specialized area, but most states will require a Masters degree within 5 years of beginning a teaching assignment. There are also opportunities to teach at the college level, although this will almost always require an advanced degree. Teachers are eligible at the community college level with a Masters degree, although most 4-year universities will require instructors or professors to hold a Ph.D. Computer Technology There are so many different faces and jobs available in the world of computer technology that there really is a job for someone at every education level. Technical training programs that last 1-2 years are available and will afford students jobs in the world of computer IT and even in software design. For the most part, though, jobs in software or even hardware design will require job seekers to acquire a Bachelors, and often times a Masters Degree in order to become competitive in the field or to be involved at the management level. Travel and Tourism A growing market is the world of travel and tourism, available in nearly every city. There are jobs available in this industry at every education level. Of course there will be starting positions that require little to no advanced training. These consist of waitressing, front desk clerk and even housekeeping, although the company may require some specialized training before beginning work. As far as restaurant management or as a travel agent or tour guide, you will almost always have to attend at least a technical college that specializes in restaurant management or travel. Many franchise companies will require that their management level positions go to those with at Bachelors degree. If you are interested in a job running part of a major travel company, this will almost always require an advanced Masters degree. |
