Tips for Job Searching

Before you begin the job search process, it is essential to evaluate your own personal situation, your career goals and your career options before you get started.

Consider your Career Options

Although we would all like to be able to pick up and say “I want a job as a doctor,” if you don’t have the career skills for the job, this be nearly impossible! Just the same, you may be eligible for a job working in factory, but if this is not the kind of job that would interest you or would make you happy, you will have to consider other options.

With this in mind, considering your career options is more than just going to the newspaper and picking out jobs you like. It should include taking the time to write out characteristics you could bring to a job, previous work and education experience that you have, other skills that may be necessary for a job, as well as interests you have in a certain field.

From here, you can add these together to begin categorizing whether or not you would be eligible for certain jobs when you begin your search. This may also help you to know where it is best to look for jobs as there are certain websites, magazines, or newspapers that cater to particular fields of interest.

Find Different Avenues for Job Searching

You may easily become frustrated if you stick to simply scanning the same newspaper or website every day. Of course only a handful of new jobs will come upon that site every day, so this is like sitting and waiting to win the lottery.

Consider a variety of different avenues for searching for a job, including finding websites that allow you to post your resume and websites that send you updates when new jobs in your field of interest are posted. Although websites like careerbuilder.com and monster.com are great for generalized jobs, if you are looking in a specific field, try an Internet search for a website that deals with jobs in your field.

You may also want to try going directly to company websites or even call the company. Often, companies will post job opportunities to their website or in a notice outside the company office before they take to spending money for an online or newspaper advertisement. Many of these jobs are filled even before they get a chance to post in the newspaper, so be proactive and look elsewhere.

Don’t Wait for the Search to Come to You

Instead of waiting for the perfect job to show up in a newspaper advertisement, you should instead consider going to that job. If there is a company you think would have a job you are perfect for, call that company, check out their website, or simply send in a resume.

You never know when an opening will come up and if they already have your resume and a cover letter on file, they will let you know. This will help you to avoid missing a great interview opportunity in case you don’t see the advertisement in the newspaper or online.
